As the Perasto approaches the North American coast she encounters an unexpected nor’easter. On 12 August 1839, she struggles to find deeper water and keep the lee shore off to her west.
The nor’easter, however, has other plans.
Although the entire crew is lost in the wreck, the disaster provides a catalyst for something larger.
Catalyst is the story of a young doctor who witnesses the calamity and his sense of helplessness prompts him into public service in the U.S. Congress where he successfully introduces legislation that creates the U.S. Lifesaving Service.
